April 25, 2012 Declaration of Availability Update for Casuals - Declare and Don't Show: Possible 3-Day Suspension
March 16, 2012 No More 21 Day Vacation Reporting
Vacation Reporting: Union Days are NO LONGER MANDATORY, however if you wish to be exempt from paying fines for missed meetings, votes, elections, etc you will still be required to visit the office prior to the event to sign in on the exemption sheet. The rules governing reporting BCMEA Days remain the same – they must be reported in four (4) or more day blocks. They can be reported ahead of taking the vacation, or once started, must be reported to the Union Office NO LATER than seven (7) calendar days after the start of the vacation period. It is the Union’s responsibility to report these days to the BCMEA on your behalf once you report the time to the Union. Keep in mind the Union office is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can only report vacations during that time period. click here

Casual Self-Declaration Mandate

As of December 1, 2011, there will be electronic barriers in place at despatch for those Casuals who do not self-declare regarding availability and they will be despatched LAST out of the hall.
Casuals must self declare as follows:
- Day Shift Availability: Between 16:00-20:00 the previous day
- Night & Graveyard Availability: Between 04:00-13:30 same day
- 5:45 Availability: Between 14:00-15:30 same day

ILWU LOCAL 500 PENSIONERS MEET MONTHLY (except July & August)
Pensioners from all Locals are welcome to participate in the activities of the Local 500 Pensioners Organization. Keep in touch with past brothers and sisters that you worked with and haven't seen for a long period of time and renew old friendships. Monthly meetings are held on the FIRST THURSDAY OF EACH MONTH (except July & August) AT THE MARITIME LABOUR CENTRE AT 10:30 A.M. Keep up to date on the Union's activities with reports from the officers of ILWU Canada and Local 500 with periodic reports from the Union Pension and Benefits Trustees. Stay healthy, participate. The meetings last from an hour to an hour and a half and are usually very informative.

IndustrIal Fatalities
FATAL ACCIDENT AT LYNN WEST (SEABOARD), MAY 19, 2010 -- KEVIN LOWES #39862
Regular work force Heavy Duty Mechanic Kevin Lowes was fatally injured when the pontoon dock he was operating a heavy lift truck on collapsed trapping the 40T under the dock.
FATAL ACCIDENT AT LYNN WEST (SEABOARD), JANUARY 13, 2009 -- CHERYL MUSCROFT #40848
While delivering bundles of pipe to trucks, Checker Cheryl Muscroft was fatally injured when the pile of pipe gave way and rolled onto her. Emergency response by everyone was excellent. Cheryl was taken to Lion's Gate Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
